Here's the schedule of event for Sunday, July 4 in downtown Dover, Delaware! With the exception of Segway tours and vendors, all listed activities are free.
From 1 to 6 p.m., the following will be open or ongoing:
- First State Heritage Park Welcome Center and Galleries, with the current exhibition “USS Delaware: An American Battleship.” Also starting from the park welcome center is the Historic Dover Scavenger Hunt - find the clues hidden throughout Dover’s historic sites and museums. Small prizes will be given for those who uncover all the secrets of Delaware History!
- Guided tours of Legislative Hall (Photo ID is required for all adults.)
- Guided tours of The Old State House
- The Biggs Museum of American Art will be open, including a current exhibition of marine art. The Biggs Museum will also have a free “fireworks crown” craft project for children
- Children’s Colonial games & activities on The Green
1 p.m. - Dover’s Heroes of the Revolution Walking Tour. Meet at Christ Church, at the corner of South State and Water Streets, for Tories, Whigs, militia, and insurrection! Dover was a hotbed of revolutionary and loyalist activity during the struggle for American Independence. Revisit the Revolution as you visit the Dover Green and two historic cemeteries.
1:30 p.m. - Segway tours of Old Dover. First State Heritage Park has collaborated with SegZoneTours to offer this new experience. Tours begin at the First State Heritage Park Welcome Center, 121 Duke of York Street. Reservations are strongly recommended. Admission charge for this activity. 2 p.m. - Let Freedom Ring at The Old State House. Return to July 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was first read to the people of Dover. Enjoy this dramatic reading by historical interpreters and relive the excitement of that historic year as bells throughout Dover ring to honor the nation’s founders.
2:30 p.m. - Caesar Rodney Rides Again! at Delaware Public Archives. Dick Pack portrays Caesar Rodney in this tribute to Delaware’s hero of the American Revolution.
3:30 p.m. - Tales of Slavery and Freedom Walking Tour. The Dover Green was a place where free and enslaved men and women lived out their lives, where national decisions regarding slavery were debated, and where a brave group of runaways known as the Dover Eight made a daring escape from the Dover Jail. Learn about Dover’s complicated positions regarding freedom and slavery, and its role as a border state during the Civil War. Meet at the Old State House.

5 to 8:30 p.m. - Children’s activities. Moonbounces, National Guard inflatable obstacle course, pony rides and train rides at the west end of Legislative Mall near the Liberty Bell replica.
5 to 9 p.m. - Craft and food vendors. Dozens of food, craft and other vendors will be open for business on Duke of York Street on the north side of the mall.
6 p.m. - Old Fashioned 4th of July parade. Organized by American Legion Walter L. Fox Post No. 2. the parade route is down State Street, starting at Hazel Road and ending just past The Green.
6:30 p.m. - The Smooth Sounds Dance Band. This ensemble of the Milford Community Band will perform in front of Legislative Hall.
8 p.m. - Opening ceremony. Featuring a flyover, presentation of the colors by the Dover Air Force Base Color Guard, invocation and National Anthem on the Legislative Hall stage.
8:15 p.m. - The 287th Army Band of the Delaware National Guard. Performing on the Legislative Mall stage, the band will finish its show shortly about 9:15 p.m. with Tchaikovsky’s exciting “Overture 1812” – complete with cannons – leading into the fireworks.
Approximately 9:20 p.m. - Fireworks! Exploding in the sky over Legislative Hall, the pyrotechnics show by Bay Fireworks will be accompanied by this year’s musical theme.
